Mycobacterium tuberculosis on Löwenstein-Jensen medium. An incubation period of two to three months is generally required, with at least six weeks needed before any visible growth is apparent.

For Mycology Monday, here are four species of Candida on BiGGY agar. BiGGY contains yeast extract, glycine, glucose, sodium sulphite, bismuth ammonium citrate at a pH of 6.8. We have C. parapsilosis (top), C. tropicalis (right), C. krusei (bottom) and C. albicans (left).

This is a Gram stain of the anaerobic coccus Finegoldia magna. Originally in the genus Peptostreptococcus, this new genus named after Sydney "Sid" Martin Finegold (1921-2018) was created in 1999.

Bacillis antracits is non-motile (left) whereas other Bacillus species are not ... a diagnostic characteristic. In this tryptose agar deep, the colourless (colourless when oxidised) dye 2,3,5-Triphenyl-2H-tetrazol-3-ium chloride is incorporated. Metabolism (reduction) of the dye growth during motile growth results is easy visitation due to production of the red pigment formazan.
