Two ways to streak dilute … which way do you do it?

Is this the most famous agar plate ever to be photographed? Alexander Fleming’s observation on 28 September 1928 that not only changed the course of medicine, but changed society forever.

This is Figure 1 from the classic 1982 paper by Huai-Shu Xu and colleagues titled “Survival and viability of nonculturable Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae in the estuarine and marine environment”. It was published in volume 8 of Microbial Ecology, on pages 313 to 323. This image shows the viable cells of Vibrio cholerae ATCC14035 detected by a fluorescent antibody direct counting method when traditional cultural methods such as as TCBS, failed to detect any viable cells after six days of incubation in natural marine water of 11% salinity at four to six degrees Celsius. This is despite no reduction in viable cell counts detectable by fluorescent antibody methods or acridine orange direct counts.

The Australian Academy of Science live streamed a gut health seminar from Canberra this week ... this is one of the slides from the first speaker highlighting the benefits of one’s microbiome ... just in case you need reasons to have your daily dose of probiotics and prebiotics.
